We have all seen and read the numerous names and acronyms for different preparedness bags. I want to discuss some of the varying names and what are the understood specifications for them.
GHB or known as the Get Home Bag. It is for to get your ass home from where ever you may be during a crisis event. One thing to consider is this bag will have different specs for each person. It depends on your location, your daily routine, your skill sets, your tribe dynamics, your finances and your operational environment. But some specs should be the same. It should be able to carry 25 - 50 lbs of gear. It should be durable and as comfortable as you require. It needs to be adjustable beyond the basic needs of survival. It is not your EDC bag, which is meant to compliment your EDC items and is small and has limited items. This bag will need to be used to get you home form work, a vacation in another state, home form school or from your daily errand runs into the city. So as you can see, it needs to be able to adjust to the role you are using it. You can have it set up as an Bail Out Bag when you Bug Out with your vehicles and you run into some nefarious characters and get into an ambush. But then again, you need to adjust it to this role. For the majority of the time, you will have it in a GHB configuration to get you home from your daily routines.
BOB or the Bug Out Bag. Now this bag has been the ancestor of the preparedness bags. Over the years people have came up with other names, like GOOD or Get Out Of Dodge, etc. Well that is the same damn thing. The original intent of the BOB is to Bug Out and get the hell out of the location you are. So If you find yourself in the middle of a crisis event and just got home to your family. You have to make some decisions based off your current situation and operational environment. Do you Bug In for a while to monitor the situation? Is it directly affecting your location? Will it spread toward you? You see there are a ton of factors to consider before getting the hell out of there. So you decide you better Bug Out Now when you have the chance. Then you load up your BOB in your vehicle and get the hell out of there. Now that is a very simplistic example, there is a lot more to it than that. You have supplies to load, multiple vehicles to prepare, or even multiple groups to coordinate with. But the BOB is to Bug Out, not Get Home. Yes it may be permanent or temporary. Some have said it is for a temporary departure form your homestead and to be able to come back home after the crisis is over. That analogy is the same with any crisis. But if you are bugging out, then you have to consider your supplies you left will be ransacked, destroyed and gone before you return. If you Bug Out, you are planning on never coming back or staying away for an indefinite period of time. Never assume.
Go Bag / Bail Out Bag. Now this bag has pretty much one main purpose. It is meant as a last resort bag that you can grab when you have to unass your vehicle or location. It is also known as an E&E Bag. This bag needs to be configured with food, water, ammo, survival items, at the minimum. If you can add something for a shelter, extra socks, cold weather items etc depending on your location and season, then that is even better. In the ambush scenario I mentioned earlier, you grab this bag along with your rifle and chest rig and break contact from the threat. This should be like an Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for your family. You need to train with your family all the time. Practice drills like buddy team movement, break contact under fire, multiple vehicle convoy operations, Remain Over Night (RON) sites, Patrol Bases, Small Unit Tactics, etc.
What are your ideas for preparedness bags and how you would use them?
